The 8th grade computer classes are learning Google Docs. Google Docs allows the students to have a word processor, spreadsheet, slide presentation ability, form making ability and a paint feature at their fingertips at all times. The great thing about Google Docs is that everything they do is automatically saved in the cloud. They can go to any computer that has internet, log on and go back to work.
In class the students are creating a survey for the rest of their class to complete. When the survey returns, the spreadsheet automatically gathers all the information for the students. They then will use that information to compile their results. They will chart their results using the spreadsheet function. In the presentation mode they will put their survey charts on a slide and present them to their class. They all will write a summary of their project in a word processing document and send it to Ms. Thoenen for her to read.
This project will allow the students to learn most of the features of Google Docs. As they master this, their teachers will start to use this for students to do their work for class. Students can turn in their work without having to print it. This saves ink and also the student cannot lose the work. It is saved in their Google Drive where they can always find it and turn it in again if necessary.
Students are currently working on their surveys. They are being asked to work at home as well as in their computer class. They will also be completing surveys at home so in class I am available to help them chart and present their material. Completing the surveys is easy and should not require my help. Charting is new to them so more of that will be completed in class.
Ask your students about this. In the future they will be using this or something comparable in high school.
